County Monaghan was the birthplace of the poet and writer Patrick Kavanagh, one of the most significant figures in 20th century Irish poetry, who based much of his work in the county. The Patrick Kavanagh Centre is an audio-visual theatre and research library in his honour, in his native Inniskeen village.
