A cultural homeland for all things connected with Irish music, Miltown Malbay is in the middle of the west coast of County Clare. Just slightly inland from Spanish point, Miltown Malbay is approx 40 minutes drive from the county town of Ennis.
Much of Miltown Malbay's fame stems from the great musical tradition of West Clare. The village history boasts a number of local musicians, singers and dancers, the best known of whom was Willie Clancy. There is an annual Irish music festival each July, called the Willie Clancy Week, dedicated to this renowned performer - he could play the uilleann pipes, the whistle, sing and tell stories. During all events in July, lectures, recitals, concert and céilithe are open to the public.
Dr Patrick Hillery, President of Ireland 1976-1990, was born at Spanish Point near Miltown Malbay in 1923.
Miltown Malbay has several attractions of interest such as traditional music in some of the pubs, fishing and the ruins of the fifteenth-century Kilfarboy church. Visitors to Miltown Malbay have always been attracted to the beauty and magnificence of the sites in this part of the west of Ireland.
